The Niagara Falls and Whirlpool Aero Car loop offers a truly immersive hiking experience, plunging you into the dramatic Niagara Gorge. You'll navigate a path that winds through lush forest scenery, characterized by towering oak, maple, and beech trees, before reaching rocky sections right at the edge of the powerful Niagara River. The highlight is undoubtedly the Niagara Whirlpool, where the water's distinctive glacially greenish-blue hue and the mesmerizing counterclockwise vortex create an unforgettable sight.
This moderate 6.5-mile (10.5 km) hike, with 435 feet (133 metres) of elevation gain, typically takes around 2 hours and 48 minutes. Be prepared for steep descents and ascents into the gorge, and ensure you wear sturdy hiking boots, as some areas are very rocky with no defined path. Due to the challenging terrain, this Niagara Gorge hiking route is not recommended for children under eight years old.
One of the most unique aspects of this trail is its proximity to the historic Whirlpool Aero Car, an antique cable car that has been offering panoramic aerial views 250 feet (76 metres) above the swirling waters since 1916. The Niagara Whirlpool itself is a significant natural phenomenon, formed where the Niagara River makes an abrupt, nearly 90-degree turn, creating powerful Class 6 rapids.

You can catch some shade in the pavilion or along the tree-lined portion of the waterfront trail on the east side of the park, which is split to separate cyclists and walkers. A rose garden and military memorial line the path a few metres back from the water.

Walking along the paths around Parliament Hill brings you right beside the striking Library of Parliament. Built in 1876 in a distinctive circular Gothic Revival style, the library serves as the research centre for Canada’s Parliament. It is also the only part of the original Parliament complex to survive the devastating fire of 1916. Passing close to the building offers a chance to admire its intricate stonework, flying buttresses, and copper roof from ground level.

From this point on the Sentier des Voyageurs, you get one of the clearest views of Parliament Hill across the Ottawa River. With the river directly in front of you and the historic buildings rising on the opposite bank, the perspective here places you almost perfectly across from the Peace Tower and the main Parliament complex. It’s one of the best spots along the trail to pause and take in the iconic skyline of Canada’s capital.

This viewpoint looks out over the Ottawa River from the Portage Bridge, which connects Ottawa with Gatineau. Built in 1973, the bridge crosses the river just west of Parliament Hill and serves as a major link between the two cities. From here you can take in wide views of the river and the surrounding skyline, and Parliament Hill. The bridge also carries a cycling lane alongside the pedestrian path, so be mindful to stay out of the bike lane while stopping to enjoy the view or take photos.
