August 10, 2025, St. Georg Church, Wenigentaft

The church's origins date back to the 15th century. The simple building was renovated several times before its demolition in 1930. The last service took place in January 1930, followed by the laying of the foundation stone for the new building, which was consecrated in August. The hall church, with its steeple extending into the nave and supporting an octagonal tent roof between battlements, is built in the style of a fortified church. The Pietà from the 1735 altar has been preserved. The wooden figures of St. Valentine and St. Pantaleon come from an altar of the Fourteen Holy Helpers from the early 16th century. On the back wall of the galleries is a depiction of St. Christopher. Also visible are statues of Mary, St. Joseph, and St. Elizabeth. (Source: Wikipedia)

The bridge blends beautifully into the idyllic landscape. It's hard to believe that the inner-German border once ran here.

Wonderful views of Wenigentaft and the surrounding area! The covered rest area offers shelter from the rain, and Touringen hikers will find the special "Ausblick Wenigentaft" stamp here.

Wenigentaft, a village in the former Geisa district, was first documented in 815. It now belongs to the unified municipality of Buttlar and has 282 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2019). After the Second World War, with the division of Germany, Wenigentaft became part of the eastern part, the Soviet occupation zone and later the GDR. At that time, the Wenigentaft-Mansbach station was still an important hub in the regional railway network. However, with the establishment of the first border barriers, rail service to Treischfeld had to be suspended. Following the "introduction of a special order on the demarcation line" in the GDR, the Motzlar-Wenigentaft-Vacha line and the private Wenigentaft-Oechsen railway also came to an end in 1952. "Ausblick Wenigentaft" and special stamp Touringen, a rest stop with a magnificent view of the town in the UNESCO Rhön Biosphere Reserve. With its romantic, rugged nature and history, the Rhön is considered a true hiker's paradise. This view and the hiking trail leading past it offer a taste of the Rhön's natural treasures. 🔝
