Not only ancient history has left its mark on Altenstein Castle, but also the division of Germany. The ensemble is quite interesting.

The path leads through an old quarry. Those coming down the path from the castle should wear sturdy shoes. It's quite steep, and the very muddy path is not recommended in wet conditions. However, the quarry is quite easy to navigate.

Visitors should stay on the patrol path and not stray into the natural green areas. A large number of rare orchids grow there and deserve protection.

German-German history: A must-see! The term "Stasi sluice" is somewhat misleading, however. It was intended more for the infiltration of special forces in the event of a military conflict between the Warsaw Pact and NATO.
