Tips from the Community

DioMio
November 10, 2025, St. Nicolai Church, Weißensee

St. Nicholas Church was once the church of an early settlement at the foot of the castle and on the shore of the White Lake. It retained its parish rights until 1539, after which it fell almost into oblivion due to misuse. It was rediscovered, so to speak, in the 1920s and restored in 1934. It is surrounded by a spacious churchyard enclosed by a wall with a late Gothic gate. (Source: Thüringen-entdecken.de)

There is currently no circular route; you end up in a dead end, with water and moor to the left and right and finally just reeds - see my photos.

The church was built in the second half of the 12th century and is one of the largest Romanesque hall churches in Thuringia.
