This is intended to symbolize the strong connection between East and West and their unity. The then President of the Soviet Union, Mikhail Gorbachev, even traveled to this place for the inauguration. The idea of the "Green Belt of Europe" is said to have emerged during the inauguration ceremony. The work of art was created by Anka Förster and Robert Schätzle.
