The water mill is located in a very beautiful and quiet area, on the small river Neetze (the Neetze here is more the size of a small stream). The mill itself looks in need of some refurbishment though. But next to the mill there is a pretty, shady spot at the mill pond. I find it very nice that there are several watermills to see in the area. The area is good for cycling, I'm often on the road here when I cycle from Lüneburg to Dannenberg, as I'm always looking for side roads to avoid the federal road (B216).

The watermill in Ellringen is one of the highlights in the Neetzetal and the next one is in Wiecheln, halfway to Thomasburg. Around 1300, the Ellringer mill was created just outside the village on the Neetze. Long owned the monastery and later the office Lüne, she experienced in the Thirty Years War multiple looting. Nevertheless, their millers generated in the subsequent period such a fortune that the grain and oil mill could be easily rebuilt after passing troops had severely damaged in 1813 after the Göhrdeschlacht. In 1860, however, there was a compulsory auction and in the following hundred years, the mill is now sold and leased several times. Since the end of the 19th century expanded to a feed trade, they received 1927 turbine drive and since the forties electric motors, which made them largely independent of hydropower. The sale of the yard in 1960 led finally to the decommissioning: The last mill tenant had to clear the mill and in the aftermath she lost her entire facility. The mill building dating back to 1819, with a residential wing newly built after a fire in 1902, is still an impressive witness to this old mill site.
