The approximately 231-hectare nature reserve was designated in 1995 under number 169. The nature reserve, consisting of five sections, lies north of Ratzeburg in the Lauenburg Lakes Nature Park. It is part of the Green Belt along the former inner-German border. The nature reserve extends along the eastern shore of Lake Ratzeburg between Rothenhusen and Römnitz and protects the eastern shoreline of the lake up to the state border with Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, partially adjacent water areas and siltation zones, and, south of the Mechow border ditch, the Seebruch and Steinort wooded areas east of the lake, as well as a marshy area at Schwalkenberg in Römnitz.
