Friedland is home to the largest church in the surrounding area. It is a listed building. It was built in its current form between 1825 and 1828. There were two churches on the market square until the last great fire on December 7, 1822. A smaller so-called German church that served the town's citizens for worship and a former Wendish or country church that was used by the residents of the surrounding villages. After the Wendish church fell victim to the fire, the former German church was enlarged with a Gothic extension. The five-sided east extension was completed in 1846. The west side is bordered by a square tower, the oldest bell of which dates from 1570 and is topped off by a St. John's cross. The church has a three-part wooden gallery with a Sauer organ in its interior. The chancel also has a wooden walkway with a balustrade. The baptismal font from the mid-19th century contains a brass bowl from 1690.

The core of today's hall church was built in the 17th century and initially served as the German church for the German-speaking urban population, alongside the Wendish church on the same site, which served the Sorbian rural population. After a city fire in 1822 destroyed two thirds of the city, including the Wendish church, the German church was expanded in the Gothic architectural style between 1825 and 1829. It consists of a nave with seven window axes, a recessed choir with a five-eighths end in the east and a church tower in the west, the second floor of which houses the tower clock. To house the church bell cast in 1570, a bell cage was set up in the wood-clad, top floor made of timber framing behind the sound arcades. The church tower was covered with an eight-sided knick-knack roof covered with shingles. The gable roof of the nave is decorated with a bat dormer. Very inexpensive crossing! From the west side, ring the bell to call for the ferry! The ferryman also makes a living from his snack bar. So please plan a break with a snack! If you pay attention to the ferryman's many information signs, you will win his sympathy :) Whatever the case, a fantastic highlight!
