The Braunsteich was created in the 15th century by damming the Rothwassergraben to supply the iron hammer mill in Keula, approximately 2 km away. Its name comes from the rust-brown color of the water due to its high iron hydroxide content. The southern part of the Braunsteich extends into an extensive moorland landscape.
