The building was destroyed inside in a mysterious attack (March 20, 1954). After restoration from 1992 to 1997, the town hall was restored to its former beauty, and the painting in the plenary hall was also reconstructed. In the winter of 2010/2011, the ceiling painting in the mayor's office was made visible again and professionally restored.

The city has been surrounded by walls since the mid-13th century. The city fortifications are 2,435 meters long. They were built almost entirely of bricks in the monastery format, which is unique in Germany. They were originally 9–11 meters high. Today, they are between 4 and 8 meters high. The southeastern section of the city wall is named after the Glinze River, which runs parallel to it.

In 1871 a fire station was built here for the volunteer fire department. A hose tower followed in 1914. The building was used by the fire department for a period of 103 years. Afterwards it was used for different purposes. The tourist information office moved here in 2005.
