The current church has several predecessor buildings that were destroyed in city fires in the 16th and 17th centuries. The foundation stone for the current church was laid in 1854 in the neoclassical style, with design influences from the Schinkel school. The striking church tower to the west was added later, in 1909, and shows influences of Art Nouveau. The spire had to be renewed after destruction in 1988 and was restored in 2006/2010.

In the spring of 1945, shortly before the end of the war, several British prisoners of war (probably from Stalag XXB Marienburg or as part of evacuation marches) came to Putlitz. On April 24, 1945, at least four British POWs were shot dead by an SS officer. Other sources mention graves of British soldiers, possibly from a shot-down bomber crew or who died during the chaotic final days of the war. In the cemetery, there are separate war graves, including one for British dead (partially with unknown victims). The Commonwealth War Graves Commission (CWGC) maintains the graves of six Commonwealth soldiers from World War II, whose graves were rediscovered and officially cared for after German reunification.
