As the only one of the former five city gates, the Romanesque Nikolaitor has been preserved. At the exit of Karlsplatz towards Bahnhofstraße, directly next to the Nikolaikirche, one left the city through this gate in an easterly direction. Until 1832, the city gates were closed every evening. After that, the wall structure increasingly fell victim to increasing traffic. The Nikolaitor dates from around 1170. From the natural monument Mosbacher Linde, there is a fantastic panoramic view. The legendary Hörselberge and the primeval forests of the Hainich National Park are worth a short stop at any time of year, especially in autumn the view of the colorful forests in the distance is beautiful to behold. The surrounding trees, which are about 250 years old, are also worth a look. The existing bench and a shelter offer a great resting place.

Remember what drove people in 1989. Definitely not what some want again today... Freedom is diverse, but it also obliges a little.

The main market in Gotha is absolutely worth seeing. The most striking building on the main market is the Historic Town Hall, which forms the center of the Gotha main market and divides it into the upper and lower main market. The portal on the north side is among the most beautiful German Renaissance portals ever. Many decorative elements and inscriptions give the building its special character. A head sculpture with a movable lower jaw, which popular belief holds to be that of the knight Wilhelm von Grumbach, executed in 1567, is also worth mentioning.
