This chapel is dedicated to Saint Joseph, the nursing father of Jesus Christ. Like Zacharias, the father of John the Baptist, he is a man on the threshold from the Old to the New Testament. Joseph was from the house of David, one of the twelve tribes of Israel. He was a carpenter by trade and the fiancé of the Blessed Mother Mary. The feast day of Saint Joseph in the saints calendar is on March 19th, and on May 1st the church celebrates the feast of "Joseph the Worker".

The observation tower was built in 1973 at the suggestion of the then pastor Otto Andreas. This also contributed financially to the construction. The local community of Macken, as the owner, honored its former pastor and current honorary citizen of the community in the mid-1980s by naming the tower after him. http://www.macken.de/ortsfuehrer/austurm.htm
