Wildeshausen was more important than Oldenburg in the Middle Ages and received Bremen town charter in 1270. The one- and two-story Gothic brick building, facing St. Alexander's Church and oriented north-south, with a gable roof, dates back to the 14th century. The interior was remodeled in the 1930s; the extensions are more recent, the council chamber is essentially 16th century, and the fire station probably dates back to the 18th century. Both were largely rebuilt between 1934 and 1936, while the guardhouse was probably rebuilt at the end of the 19th century, after 1936. The upper hall now serves as an event space.
