The monument, which is intended to commemorate the Battle of Hemmingstedt (1500), was designed by the Kiel architect Wilhelm Voigt (1857–1916) and inaugurated on February 17, 1900. The boulder, whose weight is estimated at 25 tons, sometimes 35 to 40 tons, comes from Barlter Vierth, around twelve kilometers away. It is supported by four ashlar pillars.
