The Niegripp lock was opened in 1938 and replaced the Old Niegripp lock from 1872, located a little further north. The lock connects the Elbe river with the Mittelland Canal and the Elbe-Havel Canal. A special feature is that, depending on the water level of the Elbe, the passage through the lock occurs upwards or downwards in different directions.

Whether you're admiring the cathedral or the old railway bridge, the Elbe Cycle Path in Magdeburg is fantastic! It's very easy to cycle on and offers plenty to see. However, leaving the cycle path here is definitely recommended to explore more of the city – for example, the Hundertwasser House, 'The Green Citadel'.

It's always impressive what engineering can achieve. Here, the Mittelland Canal simply runs along above the Elbe River.
