The old station was once a lively place, full of sounds: steaming locomotives and waiting travelers. Freight cars were shunted, signals clicked, and the waiting room smelled of coal and fresh newspapers. This was where journeys to distant lands began or where workdays ended in the commuter traffic that shaped the life of the region. Today, the station has become silent; the tracks have disappeared or have become cycle paths. The station building bears traces of time, perhaps a café, a residential building, or simply a silent memory. But if you look closely, you can still recognize the rhythm of past decades—the course of the tracks in the grass, the ramp at the goods shed, the sign with faded lettering. The old station speaks without words of new beginnings and change, of technology and humanity, of the time when the train still meant heartbeat and connection here.

Park your bike for a moment, because at the old level crossing in Holzheim, you can practically smell the history of the Aartal Cycle Path! Right here, where you're cruising along now, the Aartal Railway steam locomotive once thundered past, and the crossing guard made his grand entrance. Close your eyes for a moment and listen to the hissing and puffing, the squealing of the brakes, and the shrill whistle of the locomotive before it jolted across Kirchstrasse – that was the sound of freedom, not just of freight traffic! Observe the remnants of the old tracks and the vanished barriers, which today are merely lines in the asphalt. This is pure, decelerated railway nostalgia and shows us cyclists that we've snagged the best route – without steam, but with plenty of momentum! A little humorous thought: When you ride over here at full speed, for a moment you'll feel almost as fast as the locomotive did back then.

The Herbuch Mill and the Eselweg (Ni 5): Start in Niederneisen and plunge directly into the Aar Valley. The mill is idyllically situated by the water – a great photo opportunity and a testament to the valley's former economic power. From here, follow the Ni 5 circular trail, which isn't called the Eselsweg for nothing! While it's primarily a hiking trail, it's perfect for cycling (preferably with slightly sturdier tires) as it takes you on a panoramic tour above the Aar Valley. You'll cycle leisurely up to the Wingertsberg and enjoy the fantastic panoramic view of the landscape – almost as good as from the Mensfelder Kopf. Pack your binoculars, because the expansive view is the star here. The trail offers a wonderful mix of quiet nature trails and short paved sections, perfect for getting your bike really dirty and unwinding. A relaxing, history-rich loop that's well worth the effort!

Mensfelden, Kirchstraße: The half-timbered gem with a secret cellar If you're in Mensfelden, you should leave the main routes and immerse yourself in Kirchstraße. The district is steeped in history, and you can see it in its courtyards. The half-timbered house you're referring to is usually one of those venerable buildings from the 17th century. Look out for the house with the colorful carvings, the proud dormer, and the sturdy corner posts – often a highlight of the simple facades. What's fascinating: The cellar vaults of these houses are said to contain entrances to underground passages that extend far beneath the old town – local myths or historical escape routes? That'll remain your little secret for your break. A stop here is more than just a photo opportunity; it's a time capsule. It gives you a spontaneous insight into how people have lived here for centuries. Sit briefly on a wall and soak up the village tranquility.

My tip: plan your arrival for late afternoon, because in good weather, the distant views are simply unbeatable. At 313 meters, the Meko is a quartzite peak that rises abruptly from the Limburg Basin – this is the reason for the epic view. From the top, you can see the Westerwald with its green peaks and – drum roll – Limburg Cathedral in the distance in all its glory. The Meko has been a nature reserve since 1998, and you can feel it: It is covered in a rare heathland and lean grassland, kept open by sheep grazing. This sea of purple blossoms, especially in late summer, is a stunning contrast to the vastness. Please note: Please stay on the marked paths to respect this protected flora and fauna! This is a magical place to pause for a moment on one of the benches, breathe in the expanse, and be proud of the altitude you have climbed.
