The Kaltenbronn high moor lies southeast of Gernsbach, above the Reichental district, in the middle of a huge forest area in a primeval landscape with cirques and block fields. It belongs to the forest area of the city of Gernsbach. The high moor, located at an altitude of over 900 meters, has been a nature reserve for over 60 years. The development of the high moor can be traced back around 10,000 years.

In some pictures, a small wooden hut can be seen. Unfortunately, it burned down. Maybe a new one will be built; that would be nice.

This used to be one of my favorite trails (from Kaltenbachsee to Kaltenbronn), but it's no longer rideable after recent forestry work. The new surface is extremely rough and loose; riding all the way to the Toten Mann (Dead Man) feels like riding in a gravel pit. Even with 2.2" MTB tires, it was a struggle for even the slightest bit of traction. Only with ridiculously low 0.3-0.5 bar pressure (thanks to tubeless tires) did I manage to get through reasonably safely. For a regular gravel bike, the trail is completely forgettable. I know the surface is primarily designed for heavy machinery, but the RadNETZ sign next to it now just seems cynical, even sadistic. It's a shame, but I'll be avoiding the trail.

Great views of the Murg Valley and the Rhine plain. The panoramic view is even better if you climb the tower. The road leading up has been patched several times and is quite steep, so be careful on the descent.
