The cycle path from Mallnitz to Spittal is well signposted! In some sections, knobbier tires are advantageous! 🚵‍♂️ There is a lot of interesting things to see and also good places to stop for refreshments!

From Pusarnitz, a steep footpath still leads today via the "Chapel of the Black Madonna", as the locals call the above-mentioned wayside shrine, to the Maria Hohenburg pilgrimage church, which houses a copy of the statue of grace from Altötting in Bavaria. Churchgoers from the surrounding villages always meet at the wayside shrine to walk the last part of the way together. The annual St. Mark's procession on April 25th also started here. This tradition was maintained until the beginning of the Second World War. According to an inscription on the stone block next to the wayside shrine, legend has it that the Virgin Mary rested here on the way to Hohenburg. Another story tells of a footprint on a rocky part of the church path, which is said to be from the devil, who wanted to tempt the Mother of God.

The Maria Hohenburg branch church is clearly visible on a rock that slopes steeply towards the south, northwest of Pusarnitz in the municipality of Lurnfeld. The branch church of the Pusarnitz parish was expanded into a pilgrimage church in 1706 above the St. Mark's Church, which was mentioned in 1473.

We stayed there overnight on our Alpe-Adria tour. It's a bit out of the way, but the delicious food is top-notch. Rustic rooms and friendly hosts.

From Hohenburg you have a wonderful view of Lake Millstatt – of course especially beautiful in the light of the setting sun.
