The Helenenschacht colony is located in the Ödenburger Mountains, which separates northern Burgenland from central Burgenland. The place is an old coal mining settlement and is located on the northern edge of the municipality of Ritzing, high up on the mountain directly on the Austrian-Hungarian border. Sealed off by the Iron Curtain until the end of the 1980s, Helenenschacht is now just a stone's throw from the Hungarian sister mine, Brennbergbánya, and down to Sopron / Ödenburg.

The "Herrentisch" is a historic place where the lords of Rohrbach, Sieggraben, Lackenbach and Ödenburg used to meet. It is a popular meeting point for hikers. A striking point with a lot of history at the narrowest point (only 4 km) of Burgenland and at an altitude of 566 m. [https://www.burgenland.info/dc/detail/POI/herrentisch-2]

From a geological point of view, the mining in Ritzing belongs to the formerly important Brennberg coalfield (Brennbergbánya) near Ödenburg, today Sopron, which was also of particular importance for the construction of the Wiener Neustadt Canal. In the 19th century, Brennberg and Ritzing were treated as two mines, the first of which belonged to the royal Hungarian free city of Ödenburg, the second to the Esterházy dominion of Lackenbach.... The observation tower, built in 2005, stands at the highest point of the Sopron Mountains in Hungary (557 m). The observation point is worth a visit from Brennbergbánya. Only a few hiking trails cross this part of the park forest. The reason for this is that during the Iron Curtain era, it was only possible to enter this region with a special permit, or nature reserves stretch across the former border zone. Since 2016, a game management and hunting educational trail has led to the observation tower, where you can find your way around the secrets of the game management and hunting world with interactive information boards and game management facilities.[visitsopron.com}
