One of the most beautiful mausoleums in the world The Taj Mahal is a beautiful, white-marble mausoleum built by the Mughal emperor Shah Jahan for his beloved wife, Mumtaz Mahal. Located on the south bank of the Yamuna River near Agra, India, the Taj Mahal took 22 years to build and was finally completed in 1653. Considered one of the New Wonders of the World, the Taj Mahal amazes every visitor not only with its symmetry and structural beauty, but also with its intricate calligraphy, inlaid flowers made of precious stones, and magnificent gardens.

A great hike along the top of the ridge and through the tea plantation back to Old Munnar! But: We got into real trouble with two different people, one a guide and the other a plantation worker, because we didn't have a permit and were threatened with a 5,000 rupee fine. It was annoying, and only after 100 apologies did he let us go. But again: A very worthwhile tour!
