The museum building is a modern concrete, steel and glass structure on an old coal bunker, thus combines the function of gallery and the original industrial ruins. Quoting from smartshanghai.com: "A former coal storage facility known as the Lao Bai Du Coal Warehouse (老白渡煤仓), it was transformed by Atelier Deshaus (who also did the West Bund’s Long Museum) into a museum. It has retained many of its original structures, like a long, elevated channel that runs into the facility from the north that used to transport coal. The raw, industrial interior is largely preserved."

The financial district in Pudong and in many aspects quite a contrast to the rest of the city (though West Bund is catching up).

Interesting design to have the arch visually coming out of the two tower buildings (construction ongoing in these at the moment). You could actually climb the arch before, but this seems to be closed by now.
