The lords of Maretsch presumably came from the burgher class and held judicial duties in Bozen in the mid-13th century, but they likely only rose to nobility in the late 13th century. In 1477, the castle passed to the Römer family. Various generations of this family were involved in the expansion of the castle, and the conversion of the medieval castle into a Renaissance residence also falls within this period. Under the ownership of the Hendl, a minor noble family in the Bozen area, further modernizations were carried out, primarily affecting the courtyard and some portals. Today, Maretsch Castle is a modern conference center that can be rented for a wide variety of events.
