Archaeological investigations in 2012 and 2013 revealed that the Sparkasse Emsland building stands on several plots that were aligned to the Hinterstraße in the Middle Ages. Wooden residential and farmhouses were lined up on the street side, and fieldstone wells were located in the garden. The properties were bordered by the town wall and moat from 1360 onwards. The course of the approximately 20-meter-wide town moat is marked in the pavement. During the Thirty Years' War, the Meppen town fortifications were expanded into a star-shaped fortress with bastions (redoubts). Here, on the so-called ‘Swedish Redoubt’, the main rampart and the outer rampart with their ditches were almost 200 meters wide together after completion. The redoubt included an armoury and several cannons. A view to the west to the avenue trees on the rampart still shows the dimensions of the fortress belt today. The ramparts and ditches were demolished in 1762. Remains of the outer rampart were preserved as flood protection and a promenade and are reminiscent of the former fortress town of Meppen.
