The idea for redesigning the site of the long-abandoned Deutsche Bahn freight yard in the Altendorf district dates back to 2014. Extensive participatory processes allowed residents to have a say in the park's design. The design of the newly created children's playground also benefited from significant input from children. This intervention area, part of the European Capital of Culture Chemnitz 2025, features a new inclusive playground as the park's centerpiece, as well as the refurbished former loading promenade with a wheelchair-friendly surface, two ping-pong tables, and various recreational areas. A new section of the Wüstenbrand-Küchwald premium cycle path has also been integrated, running between Rudolf-Krahl-Straße and Paul-Jäkel-Straße.

Following the withdrawal of the railway, the opportunity arose to create a new urban space with publicly accessible open areas, as well as additional space for housing, community facilities, and businesses, including flood protection measures.
