As early as the beginning of the 17th century, initial attempts were made to establish a Capuchin monastery in Bregenz. In 1603, Pope Clement VIII approached the provincial of the Swiss province with the request to send Capuchins to Bregenz and find a suitable site for a monastery. The plan was thwarted at the time. Three decades later, amid the turmoil of the Thirty Years' War (1618–1648), the population, oppressed by war, plague, and famine, campaigned for the establishment of a Capuchin monastery. The hill directly adjacent to the city's parish church of St. Gallus was chosen for the construction. The costs were covered by the city, the Cistercian Abbey of Mehrerau, and largely by donations. In 1639, the church was consecrated in honor of St. Anthony of Padua.

The path to the monastery entrance leads directly past the Lourdes Grotto. It houses the first statue of the Virgin Mary, created according to the specifications of Bernadette Soubirous for the Grotto of the Apparitions of Massabielle in Lourdes. However, the statue proved too small for her, so it was presented as a gift to Pope Pius IX. Later, Pope Leo XIII presented it to Countess Raczynski of Bregenz/Marienberg. On her behalf, a Lourdes Grotto was built in the forecourt of the Capuchin monastery, and in 1888, the statue was ceremoniously transferred from the castle chapel to the new chapel.
