Zittau's town hall is built in the Neo-Renaissance style, modeled on the Italian Renaissance. Completed in 1845, the building was based on plans by the Prussian architect Karl Friedrich Schinkel, but was realized by the architect Carl August Schramm, who adapted the design. The slender tower dates back to the previous building, which was destroyed in 1757.

It is located on the northeastern edge of the old town and is now structurally connected to Gottfried Semper's Old Barracks (Stara kaserna). For centuries, the Via Regia ran through the adjacent Wendish Gate, which no longer exists. See: https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wendischer_Turm
