The Liberty Creek Loop Trail near Liberty Lake offers a varied and engaging hiking experience, transitioning from marshy areas with beaver activity to dense forests of pine, fir, hemlock, and cedar. You'll find tranquility in the majestic Liberty Creek Cedar Grove, home to towering old-growth trees, before tackling a significant climb. The route also boasts at least two picturesque waterfalls, including the ~35-foot high Liberty Creek Falls, which are particularly impressive after rainfall.
This moderate 2.9-mile (4.6 km) loop, with 1172 feet (357 metres) of elevation gain, typically takes about 1 hour and 32 minutes to complete. While the initial sections are relatively flat and family-friendly, be prepared for a stiff ascent with numerous switchbacks after the cedar grove, which is where most of the elevation is gained. The trail is best enjoyed from late spring to mid-fall; winter conditions can make it impassable due to snow or ice.
What makes this trail notable is its accessibility as a forest ramble near Spokane, Washington, serving as an excellent option for early season hiking when higher elevation trails are still snow-covered. Beyond the natural beauty of the waterfalls and ancient cedar grove, you can also find the Camp Hughes Cabin at the route's highest point. On clear days, the ascent provides nice views of Liberty Lake and distant peaks like Mica Peak.
