For this walk it is advisable to wear good shoes, bring sufficient drinking water and sandals (to be able to walk through water). The bridge is half dilapidated. Don't forget to enjoy the beautiful view over the salt lake. It is most beautiful at the end of the day

While Hermanus is a fantastic destination for outdoor activities, particularly hiking, there isn't an official national park specifically named "National Park Rif Sint Marie - Hermanus." The area is renowned for its diverse natural beauty, including the well-known Fernkloof Nature Reserve and the scenic Cliff Path, both offering excellent hiking opportunities in the Overberg region of the Western Cape.
In the broader Hermanus area, komoot features over 10 family-friendly hiking routes. These trails range in difficulty, ensuring there's something suitable for various ages and fitness levels within your family.
Yes, there are several easy options perfect for families. For a relatively short and gentle loop, consider the Petrified Coral – Wooden Pier at Playa Grandi loop from Boca Sint Michiel. This easy route covers about 4.1 km with minimal elevation gain, making it suitable for a relaxed family outing. For stroller accessibility, the Hermanus Cliff Path is generally well-suited, offering paved sections and stunning ocean views.
The Hermanus region is beautiful year-round, but for family hiking, the cooler, drier months from autumn to spring (April to October) are often ideal. During this period, temperatures are more moderate, making for comfortable walking. It's also prime whale-watching season (June to November) along the coast, adding an extra dimension to your outdoor adventure.
The Hermanus area is rich in biodiversity. Along coastal paths like the Cliff Path, you might spot various marine life, including whales (in season), dolphins, and seals. Inland, especially in fynbos-rich areas like Fernkloof Nature Reserve, keep an eye out for diverse bird species, small mammals like dassies (rock hyrax), and a stunning array of unique fynbos flora.
Absolutely. Many routes offer beautiful vistas. The Kokomo Beach (Vaersen Bay) loop from Kokomo is a moderate 6.9 km circular hike that provides lovely coastal scenery. For more panoramic views, trails within Fernkloof Nature Reserve often lead to elevated points overlooking the ocean, the town, and the surrounding mountains.
Parking availability varies by trailhead. For popular areas like the Hermanus Cliff Path, there are numerous public parking spots along the route, particularly near Grotto Beach or the New Harbour. For trails within Fernkloof Nature Reserve, designated parking areas are available at the reserve's entrance. Specific komoot tours often include details on starting points and nearby parking.
For a family hike, essential items include plenty of water, snacks, sun protection (hats, sunscreen, sunglasses), and comfortable walking shoes. Depending on the weather, layers of clothing are advisable, as coastal conditions can change quickly. A basic first-aid kit is always a good idea, and don't forget binoculars for wildlife spotting!
Hermanus is well-equipped with cafes and restaurants, especially along the coastline and in the town center. After a hike on the Cliff Path, you'll find numerous eateries within easy reach. Areas around Grotto Beach and the New Harbour offer family-friendly dining options. For trails further afield, it's always a good idea to pack a picnic or check local listings in advance.
The Hermanus area is highly rated by the komoot community, with an average score of 4.7 stars from over 145 ratings. Reviewers often praise the breathtaking coastal views, the diverse fynbos vegetation, and the excellent opportunities for whale watching during the season. The well-maintained paths and variety of trails suitable for all ages are also frequently highlighted.
