Tips from the Community

January 7, 2026, Montagne Pelée Trail

A very difficult hike; it's astonishing how many people are wearing inadequate footwear. Steep ascents and descents with high steps, often slippery due to the frequent cloud cover. The final section from the third refuge to the summit of "Le Chinois" is only recommended for experienced hikers, as it consists almost entirely of boulders. It's also advisable to wear long trousers, as you'll frequently be scraping along bushes. The detour of about 150 meters to the summit cross to the left of the arrival point on the crater rim is a good path, but unfortunately very overgrown. Nevertheless, it's an absolutely worthwhile detour because the cross offers a fantastic view south across the entire island, and you can also look down into the crater.

Difficult hike, unmaintained trails, broken steps, lots of climbing and crevasses on the way up. Very cloudy at the summit despite arriving around 7 a.m. But very beautiful view of the Caldera Pass.

Great views from Mont Pelée volcano to the coast.

From the car park (west side) it first goes up a washed-out path through ferns and grasses. There the path turns into a scramble over lava boulders. Good footwear is mandatory. You will be rewarded with a great view as far as Trois Ilets.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the general difficulty level of volcano hikes in Réserve Biologique Intégrale Du Prêcheur Grand'Rivière?

The volcano hikes in this region, particularly those ascending Mont Pelée, are generally considered difficult. They often involve significant elevation gain, rugged terrain, and can be physically demanding. Hikers should be well-prepared with appropriate gear and fitness levels.

Are there any family-friendly volcano hikes in this area?

Given the challenging nature of the terrain and significant elevation changes, most volcano hikes directly on Mont Pelée are not typically recommended for young children or those seeking an easy family outing. These trails are rated as difficult, requiring good physical condition. For easier options, consider coastal walks or other natural areas in Martinique.

What are the main landmarks or viewpoints to expect on these volcano trails?

The primary landmark is, of course, Mont Pelée itself, offering stunning views of its caldera and crater rim. Trails like the Le Chinois Summit – View of Montagne Pelée loop from Montagne Pelée or the View of Montagne Pelée – Caldera of Montagne Pelée loop from Desiles provide panoramic vistas of the surrounding landscape and the Caribbean Sea on clear days.

Is parking available for volcano hikes in Réserve Biologique Intégrale Du Prêcheur Grand'Rivière?

Yes, parking is typically available at the main trailheads leading up Mont Pelée. Specific parking areas can be found near starting points like those for the View of Montagne Pelée – Crater Rim of Mount Pelée loop from Le Prêcheur or other access points to the volcano. It's advisable to arrive early, especially during peak season, as spaces can fill up.

Can I reach the volcano hiking trails using public transport?

Public transport options to the trailheads of Mont Pelée are limited. While local buses serve towns like Le Prêcheur and Grand'Rivière, reaching the specific starting points for hikes often requires a taxi, car rental, or hitchhiking. Planning your transport in advance is highly recommended.

What is the best time of year to hike the volcano trails in Northern Martinique?

The dry season, from December to May, is generally the best time for hiking in Northern Martinique. During these months, you'll experience less rain, lower humidity, and clearer skies, which are ideal for enjoying the panoramic views from Mont Pelée. The wet season (June to November) brings more frequent rainfall, which can make trails slippery and obscure views.

Are there any loop trails available for volcano hiking?

Yes, several loop trails allow you to experience the volcanic landscape. Examples include the View of Montagne Pelée – Mount Pelée Trail loop from Le Chinois, which offers a comprehensive experience of the mountain's features, or the shorter View of Montagne Pelée loop from Montagne Pelée.

What should I wear and bring for a volcano hike in this region?

For volcano hikes, wear sturdy hiking boots with good ankle support, as trails can be rocky and uneven. Layered clothing is recommended, as temperatures can change with elevation.
