April 22, 2026, Harbor Promenade of Samos

What is there to see along the harbor? Besides restaurants, bars, ice cream parlors, souvenir shops, etc., for fans of big ships – of course, the cruise ships. At the time of my visit, one of them was docked in the harbor. At this point on the street, you will also find the customs office and the harbor administration. Furthermore, while strolling along the promenade, you pass the Catholic Church of Samos – Church of St. Mary. It appears to be in need of some renovation. Approximately in the middle of the waterfront street, you will reach Pythagoras Square with the Lion of Samos. This part of the street seemed the most beautifully designed to me – which is, of course, a matter of taste. Regarding the monument: The monument of the Lion of Samos dates from 1930. It was erected in memory of the Greek freedom fighters. The lion "grins" – as the locals say. And it "grins" because the Greek freedom fighters were able to victoriously defeat the Turks on August 6, 1824. Is the lion actually grinning? Could be, could be not… :-) My conclusion: A short stroll along the harbor is definitely interesting.

It's not exactly a beach restaurant, right next to the amphitheater. But the view is great and the food is good.

Churches are always a place of peace. However, this one was hit hard by the 2020 earthquake and will likely not be rebuilt.

An old kafenion at the top of Ano Vathy. Many years ago, we drank an ouzo here for 100 drachmas and were treated to fantastic meze.
