The cemetery was established in 1888 and moved to its present location in 1925. In addition to the Sephardic cemetery, there is an Ashkenazi cemetery in Belgrade, which is now part of the New Cemetery.

The New Belgrade Cemetery was built in 1886 as the first planned urban cemetery in Serbia. Since the end of World War I, members of denominations other than the Serbian Orthodox Church have also been buried. In addition to a section for Russian emigrants, there are also war graves.

The Sephardic Cemetery in Belgrade is a Jewish burial ground. It is 12,748 square meters in size and has over 4,000 tombstones, mostly from the 19th to 20th centuries. The cemetery is located in the Palilula district and is separated from the New Cemetery by Roosevelt Street (Ulica Ruzveltvo), which, however, is already in the Zvezdara district. The cemetery is cut centrally by an avenue of pine trees, which ends with the memorial to the Jewish victims of fascism. Near the entrance is the Monument to the Fallen Heroes for Liberation, Freedom and Unification of the Fatherland, erected in 1927, commemorating 132 Jewish soldiers of the 1912-19 wars. At the end of the pine avenue is the Memorial to the Jewish Victims of Fascism, designed by Yugoslav architect and sculptor Bogdan Bogdanović in 1951 and completed in 1952. It was commissioned by the Jewish community in Belgrade and was one of the first Holocaust memorials on Yugoslav territory. The memorial consists of two 10.5 meter high concrete wings covered with granite slabs. Since the memorial is at the lowest point in the cemetery, Bogdanović increased the upward spacing of the wings to create an "anti-perspective". On the front is a Star of David and the Hebrew abbreviation of a quote from 1 Samuel (25:29). On the back are blessing priest's hands and a Levite's jug. Behind the left wing is a free-standing menorah. Spolia from the old town of Belgrade, which was bombed during the Second World War, were built into the pavement of the dromos and the low walls surrounding it. In addition to the symbolic meaning, these were also chosen due to a lack of building material, since the Jewish community insisted on stone as a building material. Source: Wikipedia
