One of the most beautiful places. A great view of the old town, the sea and Elba. Of course you can also see ships here.

The tower is the ancient gate of the city, it was built in 1212 at the behest of Rinaldo Orsini, lord of Piombino. In 1447 it was modified, with the insertion of another structure, the Rivellino, which was added to improve the artillery defense. Currently only the 15th century part and the arch, built in the mid-19th century, are open to the public.

In the old town of Piombino, overlooking Piazza Bovio, stands the majestic Palazzo Appiani, a building full of history and changes over the centuries. Built in the 14th century, the palazzo was once the residence of the Appiani family, lords of the city. Between its walls are hidden secrets dating back to the 13th century and rooms that over time housed a theater, a 14th century church and even a prison bath built by Elisa Bonaparte Baciocchi in 1809. Today, Palazzo Appiani houses the Museum of the Sea and the Aquarium of the City of Piombino, founded in 1985. This cultural and educational center is dedicated to the study and dissemination of the marine biodiversity of the Mediterranean. The aquarium, equipped with fifteen tanks, allows visitors to admire underwater life up close thanks to a system that connects the sea directly to the tanks. In addition to the fauna, the museum has a valuable malacological collection, with shells so tiny that they require a binocular magnifying glass to be admired in detail

Originally dedicated to Saint John the Baptist, it was built in the first half of the 13th century. It is a single-nave church with apse in Romanesque style. Over the centuries, numerous interventions have been made, such as the opening of the chapels on the right side. It also changed different denominations and religious orders and was also, for a time, the seat of the Franciscan monks, who built their monastery next to the church in the 16th century. Of the old church, probably only the structure and the stone cladding of the lower part of the façade remain today. The building was rebuilt in 1515. Inside there are some beautiful stone fragments, probably from the original factory, of different dates. The crucifix on the transept altar dates from the 16th century. The two palaces (facing the church) on the right and left are of later periods; the first, the ancient convent, probably dates back to the 14th century and preserves inside a typical portico in late Romanesque style as well as various coats of arms, both inside and on the façade; the building on the right dates back to the 16th century and was built by order of Jacopo VI Appiani as the most important city hospital of the time and dedicated to the Holy Trinity and Saint John of God.

The original nucleus of the palace dates back to the 13th century, when it was called “Palazzo dei Priori” or “Palazzo della Comunità”. The current palace was built in 1444 by Nanni di Magio at the request of the elders of Piombino, who until that year met in the ancient Palazzaccio, a building that has not come down to us and was probably located at the corner of via “Trapalazzi”, today's via Giuseppe Garibaldi. The tower dates back to 1598. The palace, like the tower, was the subject of an extensive and controversial restoration operation in 1933–1937, under the direction of the Sienese architect Egisto Bellini.
