The marked hiking trail here leads through the Dornskopf, the ford is several meters wide and varies in depth depending on the water level. So either take your shoes off or put on rubber boots from the start or be inventive or go around it. But be careful: the ford over the Dornskopf further north also has water!

There are a surprising number of providers of punting trips, some of which I have compiled without claiming to be complete: Boat trips from Rheinhausen: http://www.kossmann-bootsfahrten.de/ From Rust: https://www.naturzentrum-rheinauen.eu/2689262 http://www.rust-taubergiessen-bootsausfluege.de/ https://taubergiessentour.de/ https://freiburg-taubergiessen.de/bootsfahrten/taubergiessenbootsfahrten-fischerkahnfahrt/ From Kappel-Grafenhausen: https://jaeger-bootsfahrten.de/

From the old Königssträßle you have a wonderful view of Bombach, behind it the Black Forest and on the other side to Nordweil, Alsace and the Vosges. The Kaiserstuhl can also be seen. Fantastic views are possible from here, especially when there are colorful sunsets or cloud formations over the Vosges.

Elzwiesen is characterized by its expansive, flat wet meadows, plains, and grasslands, which are crucial habitats for diverse wildlife. You'll often hike alongside the "Alte Elz" river, with the majestic Black Forest providing a stunning backdrop. It's a serene, open landscape perfect for peaceful walks with your dog.
Yes, as Elzwiesen is a significant natural and landscape conservation area, it's important to keep dogs on a leash, especially to protect ground-nesting birds and other wildlife. During the breeding season (March 1st to June 30th), some Elz dams may be closed to pedestrians to further protect nesting birds, so be mindful of signage.
The komoot community highly rates the dog-friendly trails in Elzwiesen, with an average score of 4.5 out of 5 stars from over 3,900 ratings. Hikers often praise the peaceful, open landscapes, the opportunities for birdwatching, and the well-maintained paths that are ideal for walking with dogs.
Absolutely. Many of the trails are relatively flat and offer circular options. For an easy, scenic loop, consider the Old Rhine Taubergießen – Taubergießen Stream loop from Rheinhausen, which is just under 5 km and perfect for a relaxed walk with your dog.
Yes, if you're looking for a longer adventure, the Boat dock in Taubergießen – Taubergießen Nature Reserve loop from Rheinau offers a moderate challenge over approximately 16.6 km, allowing you and your dog to explore more of the diverse nature reserve.
Elzwiesen is a bird paradise, so you might spot rare species like lapwings and great curlews, or migratory birds such as silver herons and storks. The wet meadows also support a variety of insects, including butterflies and wild bees. The "Alte Elz" river adds to the natural beauty. Remember to keep your dog leashed to avoid disturbing wildlife.
While the focus is on natural beauty, the Elzwiesen Nature Reserve itself is the main attraction. You can also find the Cycle Path Along the Elzwiesen, which offers additional routes for walking. For something different, the Europa-Park area is nearby, featuring highlights like the Lighthouse in Europa-Park Rust.
Spring and autumn are particularly beautiful, with pleasant temperatures and vibrant natural colors. However, be aware that during the bird breeding season (March 1st to June 30th), some areas may have restricted access to protect nesting birds. Always check local signage before heading out.
Yes, while Elzwiesen itself is flat, the Black Forest forms a scenic backdrop. Trails like the View from Königssträßle – View of Bombach loop from Kenzingen, though slightly outside the immediate Elzwiesen core, offer elevated perspectives and views towards the Black Forest, providing a contrasting landscape to the meadows.
Many of the easy and moderate trails are well-suited for families, especially those with dogs. The flat terrain and well-maintained paths make for comfortable walking. Routes like the Dornskopf in the Taubergießen loop are excellent choices for a family outing with your dog.
