A little way outside of Dedenborn lies the former oil mill in the Tiefenbach Valley between Dedenborn and Kesternich. A very beautiful, dreamy place.

Hedges require careful care. Only with regular maintenance do they stay nice and dense at the bottom. If individual branches grow out, I simply remove them with hedge trimmers. To get straight, knot-free branches, the side branches must be regularly trimmed. You have to be very careful not to damage the main trunk, because the tree's vital sap flows close to the bark. If a branch is too shaded, it will stretch out sideways toward the light and become very crooked. That's when my chainsaw comes in; it makes good firewood. It's also important that the crown remains sufficiently large. This allows the leaf canopy to produce enough material for the wood to grow in the summer. In the past, these branches provided valuable wood for craft and furniture. Unfortunately, our grazing livestock also like the hedges – the delicious beech leaves are a welcome change from the grasses and herbs in the meadow. That's why I protect the beech hedges with additional fences. And very important: hedges must be trimmed in winter, when there's no sap in the branches. When it's cold, the risk of disease from the cuts is much lower! << Source: Information board.
