"The port was begun in the early 1920s on the initiative of Mayor Konrad Adenauer. As early as 1900, the port administration presented a cost plan for the new port in Niehl, but it wasn't until 1912 that a final decision was made on the planning. Despite initial reservations about the high costs, the benefits in the form of jobs and tax revenues overcame the decision." (Author: Dr. Ulrich S. Soénius, historian and director of the Rhineland-Westphalian Economic Archives Foundation in Cologne.)

Franz Egon von Fürstenberg-Stammheim is the builder of the palace and park. He was also the first honorary citizen of the city of Cologne - he was given this title because he campaigned for the completion of the cathedral. In order to observe the progress of "his" project from Stammheim, he had this hill built and probably sat there for many hours as if on a throne!?
