This is the story of a young Australian (Peter Knox) who volunteered for the RAF in 1941. During a bombing raid on Germany on June 21-22, 1944, his Lancaster was shot down. Thanks to the coolness and courage of many people in the Kempen region, he was able to remain in hiding for months and escape the probing enemy. On September 3, 2006, a monument was unveiled in the woods of Mol-Postel in memory of the crew members and all the known and unknown heroes in the Kempen region and elsewhere, who all risked their lives for the ultimate goal: the liberation of our country, which had been suffering under German occupation since May 1940.

Place of remembrance for our Liberators of WWII. A Lancaster 1 Flying Fortress crashed at this location. Historical significance: Mission DUSSELDORF In Wesseling, Germany, near Cologne, there were factories and installations for the production of synthetic fuels. This industry became the target of the mission in which Lancaster I, ME846 'PG-C', was part during the short night of June 21-22, 1944. A total of 133 Lancaster bombers and six Mosquitoes participated. It was a difficult mission, deep in enemy territory. The aircraft, with its seven-man crew, took off from their base at Dunholm Lodge just before midnight. They were carrying sixteen 500-lb bombs and a 'Cookie', a 4,000-lb (1,815 kg) bomb. They had to unload their cargo at 20,000 feet (6,096 m) above Wesseling. Lancaster ME846 was shot down by Captain Eckart-Willem Von Bonin. George Harry Moggridge and John Ernest Ralph Bowering were killed and are buried at Schoonselhof. Pilot Davis is still missing; he most likely died on impact, as the cargo exploded with the aircraft.
