November 10, 2025, “Voor vrijheid is moed nodig”

The location of the monument "For Freedom, Courage Is Needed" in Amersfoort is of great historical significance. It stands on the site of Gerrit van 't Eind's food warehouse and home during World War II, at Snouckaertlaan 70. From this building, Gerrit van 't Eind helped prisoners in Camp Amersfoort with food, an act of resistance and humanity. His son, Rinus van 't Eind, was active in the student resistance in Utrecht and passed information to the Allies via an illegal telephone exchange. On April 18, 1945, just three weeks before liberation, father and son were arrested by the Nazis, tortured in a villa at Laan 1914, and executed five days later.

The artwork "Een mens is meer" (A person is more) in Amersfoort is a striking installation that has been on display since 2014 at the corner of Snouckaertlaan and Stationsstraat, near the station. Design: Studio Thonik, a renowned Dutch design collective. Execution: Bert Fest The work consists of large typographic letters that together form the sentence "Een mens is meer" (A person is more). The message is powerful and philosophical: it reminds passersby that people are more than their function, appearance, or role in society. The artwork invites reflection on human dignity and identity.
