If you walk from the pedestrian zone through the Herbartgang, you reach the Waffenplatz. Today it is an important entry point to the city center, but it wasn't always like that. After the city fire in 1679, barracks were built here for the Danish garrison. Later, the poor and sick were housed in them. After the demolition of the barracks, in the revolutionary year of 1848, weapons for the civic guard were issued on this square. Hence the name Waffenplatz. After serving as a parking lot for a long time, a new quarter has developed here today with a high-quality mix of retail, gastronomy, and office spaces for innovative companies. Where cars used to park, the Waffenplatz today presents itself as a modern, urban square with water fountains and a double row of plane trees. The Oldenburg city center thus has another very attractive square for events, in addition to the Schloßplatz.

The last remaining representative half-timbered house (1617) from the period before the great city fire can be seen here. Wilhelm Degode from Jever took over the house in 1860. Inside, there is a painted wooden ceiling from 1645 with an allegorical representation of the then-known continents.
