In memory of Graodus fan Nijmegen (real name: Theodore Johannes Eikmans) and his song "Al mot me krupen..." (Even if I have to crawl...), this statue of Toon Heijmans was erected in Nijmegen's city center in 2006. The song is a tribute to the city in general and the Sint-Stevenstoren (St. Steven's Gate) in particular. The lyrics describe places in Nijmegen's city center that were lost, mainly in the 20th century, as a result of bombing or demolition. The song can also be heard during Carnival. The lyrics are depicted on the statue of Toon Heijmans, and a line of carnival-goers can be seen climbing the Sint-Stevenstoren (St. Steven's Gate). The Church of St. Peter Canisius (Dutch: Sint-Petrus Canisiuskerk, also Molenstraatkerk) is a Roman Catholic parish church in Nijmegen. It is located on the Molenstraat in the city center and is run by the Society of Jesus. The church stands on the site of a 14th-century monastery. After the Eighty Years' War, the site was used as a Walloon church, later as a Lutheran church, and after 1818 again as a Catholic church, which was given to the Jesuits. Because the church was too small for the growing Catholic population, this larger, Gothic Revival church with a presbytery was built between 1894 and 1896 by the architect Nicolaas Molenaar Sr. The new church was consecrated in 1898. It received its current name in 1925, when it was dedicated to St. Peter Canisius, who was canonized that year. During World War II, Nijmegen was heavily bombed, and a large part of the church building was destroyed in February 1944, leaving only the choir and transept. Between 1958 and 1960, a new church building was built by architects J. Coumans, W. van Dael, and A. Siebers and connected to the old transept and choir.
