The Węgorzewski Canal is a picturesque section of the Masurian waterway network, connecting Lake Mamry with the port in Węgorzewo. Less than a kilometer long, it runs alongside the Węgorapa River, and its banks create a pleasant place for walking and cycling thanks to a modernized pedestrian and bicycle path. It's a peaceful place where you can observe waterfowl and beavers, and in summer, relax at the nearby Mamry municipal beach.

The Masurian Canal is an unfinished, impressive project that was intended to connect Mamry with Łyna and the Baltic Sea. Today, it runs through Poland and the Kaliningrad Oblast and is closed to navigation. On the Polish side, it's worth seeing the monumental locks in Leśniewo and the only operational lock, Piaski. Along the canal are embankments and former towpaths, perfect for walking or cycling.

Lake Przystań, a deep bay of Mamr, is a great destination for a bike trip in the vicinity of Węgorzewo. There is a picturesque section of Green Velo along the Mała Pętla Mamr. The lake is famous for its crystal clear water and great depth - it is popular with divers, who can explore here, among others, the sunken tug Arabela. There is a comfortable MOR and a small beach with a pier in this place. In the area it is also worth seeing bunkers from World War II.

There is a museum here and the main building has long been under renovation.

A beautifully situated 920-meter-long canal connects the Węgorzewo marina with Lake Mamry. Yachts and Masurian Shipping vessels ply the canal. The canal was built to shorten the stretch of water connecting Lake Mamry with the Węgorzewo port. The winding Węgorapa River was too difficult to navigate (officially, swimming is prohibited on the section that bypasses the canal). A pedestrian and bicycle path runs along the canal, a favorite strolling spot for residents and tourists, offering opportunities to admire the natural scenery and the sights of ships and yachts passing through. Nature is truly alive near the canal and on the island – beavers feed and birds gather. A Natura 2000 protected area is located nearby. You can see grey herons, red-necked grebes, bitterns, mergansers, cranes, and kites nearby. https://mazury24.eu/atrakcje-turystyczne/kanal-wegorzewski,342

I didn't quite understand what our tour guide was trying to explain to me as historical background 🤔 We cycled all around the never-completed canal on wonderfully accessible forest paths.
