Tips from the Community

Wolfgang STB

At the beginning of the 13th century, Hadmar II of Kuenring had the castle town of Weitra built. Since its founding, Weitra held the central military, administrative, judicial, and ecclesiastical functions in the so-called "Districtus Witrensis" (District of Witrensis). It was also a central market town and refuge in times of war. In the 16th century, the castle was rebuilt into a magnificent Renaissance palace according to plans by Pietro Ferrabosco. In 1994, the palace was renovated by Prince Johannes zu Fürstenberg and opened to the public. More on the history: https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Schloss_Weitra

Imagine you're in South Bohemia, surrounded by green forests, picturesque villages, and the largest pond in the Czech Republic – Rožmberk Pond, also affectionately known as Rosenberg. But what actually happens when the pond is "fished out"? This is no ordinary fishing activity, but a true spectacle! The Rožmberk Pond fish-out is, so to speak, the "Great Fish Event" of the year. Fishermen, nature lovers, and even curious tourists gather here to witness a centuries-old ritual. And yes, it's so exciting that even the fish are probably curious to see what happens next! The process is simple: Using large nets, boats, and sometimes even traditional Czech fishing hooks, the pond is "cleaned." It's not just about the catch – it's also an opportunity to maintain the pond and ensure water quality. And of course, the fish-out also ensures a fresh portion of fish on the region's plates! The fish caught here are mainly carp, which has a real tradition in the Czech Republic. It is said that the carp in Rožmberk Pond are so large and juicy that they are almost legendary. Some even claim that the fish happily say "Hello!" as they jump into the nets during the harvest! And the best part: Harvesting is not just a job for the fishermen, but also a celebration for the entire region. There's music, delicious food (with lots of fish, of course!), and children can watch the fish "dive" into the water. It's a true experience that shows how closely connected the people here are with nature. In short, harvesting Rožmberk Pond is a fascinating spectacle full of tradition, fun, and, of course, delicious fish. So, next time you're in South Bohemia, don't miss this major fishing event – it's a real highlight!
