When we checked in, we were asked whether we wanted a four-poster bed or not. We opted for one. A guesthouse with a great beer garden and delicious food.

In the 19th century, peat was used as fuel for heating homes. Farmers and settlers went to the "Fuizn" (peat cutting) to cut peat; peat was considered the poor man's coal. With the advent of industrialization, peat was mined on a large scale from 1876 onwards. The peat was removed with machines and the moor was drained. This created jobs and led to the establishment of a settlement in the emerging Nicklheim. Many seasonal workers toiled in the summer on piecework contracts, while some settled permanently on the brown, peat-drained land, and a new town emerged: today's Nicklheim (municipality of Raubling). With the emergence of other, more profitable fuels, peat in Nicklheim was mined primarily for potting soil from the mid-1950s onwards. However, in line with growing environmental awareness, the peat works in Raubling closed in 2006. It was declared a landscape conservation area in 1989 and has been continuously watered and renaturalized since then. The Filzen are unique in Europe due to their size, as there is no larger moorland restoration project in Europe than here, just outside Rosenheim. The remaining tracks of the former peat works are still used today for Bockerlbahn rides. https://www.chiemsee-alpenland.de/entdecken/tourenportal/nicklheimer-bockerlbahn-5eab00ac1c

You can clearly see the black peat soil that has not yet been dug. There is also a display board showing the most important and very sharp tools used by peat cutters.
