Soviet sculptor Alexandra Briedis (1901-1992) was the People's Artist of the Latvian SSR (1955). She studied at the Academy of Arts in Riga (1923-31) and created bronze and stone sculptures, tombstones, and works of fine porcelain sculptures. She was awarded the Order of Lenin and the Order of Merit. Since 1951, the leading theme of Briedis has become Lenin. Her statue of Lenin was established in 1956 in the Latvian SSR Supreme Soviet building. She has created the "Daina" (= Song) statue in 1939, one year before the Soviet occupation of Latvia under the Molotov-Ribbentrop Pact. She truly believed in the Soviet ideology and tried to further it with her "patriotic" sculptures.
