In 1928, Umberto Nobile led an Italian expedition to the North Pole with the airship „Italia“. The expedition reached the North Pole, but on the way back, the airship crashed. A large-scale international rescue operation was launched, in which Roald Amundsen also participated with the flying boat „Latham“. However, Amundsen also crashed, and the flying boat disappeared on June 18. This became one of the greatest rescue operations in the history of the polar regions, involving over 1,500 people from seven nations. It took 48 days until all survivors of the airship journey were rescued – of the eleven-person crew, only five survived. Nobile himself was among the first to be rescued and tried to coordinate the rescue efforts from Spitsbergen. In retrospect, Nobile was accused of having left his crew on the ice and spent the rest of his life trying to prove his innocence. In 1969, Nobile erected a monument in Telegrafbukta in Tromsø to commemorate those who had sacrificed their lives in connection with the Italian expedition and the rescue efforts in 1928. Breathtaking views across to neighbouring islands & the mainland. It is possible to glimpse aurora from here - if conditions allow of course. There is still a small amount of light pollution but much less than the centre. A lovely friluftsliv park nearby, too.

Pure nature just a short walk outside town. Good for a run or skiing at any suitable time of the year. Off the main tourist track, good for a picnic and taking a breather from town. Skip one of the main touristy attractions and go for this lake would be my consideration, if limited in time...

Beautiful lake. The hike from Tromsø via Telegrafbukta to Prestvannet Lake and back to the city is worthwhile.
