This is a small single room hut. There is a water tank that in November 2024 had a bucket underneath. The water needs to be treated before drinking but if you need water for other reasons you have a source.

It is worth spending a bit of time here to look around. There are remnants of it being used such as the exotic trees and the grave slightly up the hill. There is also a drop toilet if needed. Sitting under the cover of the veranda is a nice way to have a rest.

Great camping spot beside an historic hut. There’s no toilet at this hut.

Great camping spot by this historic hut. There’s a decent toilet and easy creek access for water.

Cute little historic hut - there’s a creek nearby, but access is often overgrown and boggy, there’s no toilet at this hut.

What is the typical difficulty level for touring cycling in Scabby Range Nature Reserve?

The routes in Scabby Range Nature Reserve are generally considered moderate to difficult. For example, the Westermans Hut – Brayshaw's Hut loop is a moderate ride, while the Hospital Creek Hut – Brayshaw's Hut loop presents a more difficult challenge. Cyclists should be prepared for unpaved and potentially difficult segments, where pushing bikes may be necessary due to the challenging terrain and significant elevation gains.

Are there any circular touring cycling routes in the reserve?

Yes, all five touring cycling routes in Scabby Range Nature Reserve are designed as circular loops. This allows for convenient starts and finishes, such as the Hospital Creek Hut – Waterhole Hut loop from Yankee Hat Carpark or the Waterhole Hut – Westermans Hut loop from Mount Clear Campground.

What kind of terrain should I expect on these no-traffic routes?

Expect rugged, high-altitude wilderness terrain. Routes often follow dry-weather 4WD fire trails, which are unpaved and can be challenging. What is the best time of year to go touring cycling in Scabby Range Nature Reserve?

Given the high-altitude and rugged nature of the reserve, the best time for touring cycling is generally during dry weather conditions. Spring and autumn typically offer more stable weather.

Is Scabby Range Nature Reserve suitable for family touring cycling?

Scabby Range Nature Reserve offers challenging routes that are generally better suited for experienced touring cyclists due to the rugged terrain, significant elevation gains, and remote nature.
