Apparently one of the oldest continuously occupied castles in mainland Scotland, Duntrune Castle was constructed by MacDougall clan in the 13th century. For James Bond fans, Duntrune castle was a model for the gateposts at Skyfall Lodge, James' childhood home

Poltalloch House is a large Jacobean mansion of two storeys, designed by William Burn in the 1830s. It was stripped and unroofed in the 1950s, and is now a shell. - https://www.thecastlesofscotland.co.uk/the-best-castles/other-articles/poltalloch - https://canmore.org.uk/site/22855/old-poltalloch St Columba's Church, Poltalloch: The church was built by Neil Malcolm of Poltalloch in the policies of his new mansion at Calton Mor, and was completed and consecrated in 1854. He settled an endowment for the stipend of the Incumbent and for maintenance of the building. The graveyard is a private burial ground. The architect of the church was Thomas Cundy, Junior. He was surveyor of the Grosvenor Estate in London during the development of the residential area of Belgravia, and designed several London churches, including St Paul's, Knightsbridge, and St Barnabas', Pimlico. The terrain around Dunadd is quite varied. You'll find paths through ancient Kilmartin Glen, which can be relatively flat, as well as sections with rocky crags, especially near Dunadd Fort itself. Some routes also traverse bogland paths, particularly around the Mòine Mhòr National Nature Reserve, offering a unique natural experience. Always be prepared for potentially uneven surfaces.
Yes, several family-friendly routes are circular, making them convenient for returning to your starting point. For example, the Temple Wood stone circle – Nether Largie South Cairn loop from Kilmartin is an easy circular option, and the Kilmartin Glebe Cairn – Nether Largie Mid Cairn loop from Kilmartin also offers a pleasant loop.
Dunadd and the surrounding Kilmartin Glen are exceptionally rich in history. You can explore the ancient Dunadd Fort itself, which was once the capital of Dál Riata. Many trails also lead past significant prehistoric sites. For instance, you can visit the Temple Wood stone circle, Kilmartin Glebe Cairn, and Nether Largie South Cairn. The Cairns of Kilmartin & Carnasserie Castle route combines ancient cairns with a historic castle.
The path to Dunadd Fort is generally accessible, leading through lower levels and a rocky defile. However, the ascent to the fort's summit involves steep sections. While rewarding with panoramic views, families with very young children or strollers might find the final climb challenging. Many of the other trails in the area are easier and more suitable for all family members.

Spring and autumn are generally the best times to visit Dunadd for hiking with your family. The weather is typically milder, and the landscapes are particularly beautiful with spring blooms or autumn colours. Summer can also be pleasant, but be prepared for potentially warmer temperatures and more visitors. Winter can be cold and wet, making some paths muddy or slippery.
Many trails in the Dunadd area are dog-friendly, but it's always best to check specific route details for any restrictions, especially in nature reserves or near livestock. When hiking with dogs, please keep them on a lead, especially around wildlife or farm animals, and always clean up after them.
Parking is available at key trailheads and attractions. For Dunadd Fort itself, there is a car park from which a path leads directly to the fort. For other routes in Kilmartin Glen, you'll find parking facilities in or near Kilmartin village and at various ancient monument sites. Always check local signage for parking regulations and fees.
