The theatre was built between 1778 and 1783 according to the plans of the provincial architect for bridges and roads, E. Gauthey, and financed by J. Galland, who in return profited from the theatre's revenues for 29 years. The comprehensive renovation took place in 1885 and 1886 according to the plans of the architect A.
