September 16, 2025, Sozopol Old Town

Sozopol emerged from the Greek colony of Apollonia and, along with Nessebar, is one of the oldest cities in Bulgaria. The Bay of Sozopol is one of the oldest inhabited regions in Europe. The first settlement arose between the end of the 4th and the beginning of the 3rd millennium BC and is considered by some researchers to be part of the Varna culture. Underwater archaeology has uncovered finds of dwellings, ceramics, and tools from the Bronze Age. Numerous stone anchors and anchor poles, dating to the 2nd–1st millennium BC, were also found in the Bay of Sozopol, indicating that shipping already existed at that time.
