It is part of the 8.51 km long Weser lock canal, which was built between 1953 and 1958 to facilitate shipping. Technical data: The usable length is 215 meters, the width is 12.36 meters, and the maximum lift height is 5.50 meters.

The Alte Allern are partly stagnant, partly slow-flowing waters with abundant vegetation on the banks and in the water. The ground is sandy-muddy with slightly cloudy water.
